Some 2011 Faves

2011 was like all years—filled with joyous moments and much laughter, as well as some sad moments and tears. Here are some of my favorite images from the year that haven’t already been posted on my blog. It’s fun and helpful for me to reflect on the kind of images I’m drawn to. Inevitably, they move me emotionally, are timeless and romantic, and catch a moment that reflects the heart of someone’s personality.

Our 2011 started off with the sudden death of our friend and brother-in-law Charlie Kinsey. Leslie's sister Lynn asked me to cover the event, as she knew she wouldn't be able to see everyone. The entire town of Fish Creek, Wisconsin, showed up for the celebration of Charlie's life at a favorite local restaurant and bar.

I've had the opportunity to photograph Amalie multiple times during her first year. We are awaiting the arrival of snow before our next portrait session.

Each summer Vermont Performance Lab sponsors an artists' residency in southern Vermont, and I have had the good fortune to make portraits during the residencies. Many of the images haunt me.

The Experiment in International Living asked me to photograph high school students during a summer abroad in France and Spain. Here, students rest at a Paris cathedral during a daylong treasure hunt.

Sarah and Bailey's wedding was just a few weeks after Hurricane Irene devastated much of Vermont, including their wedding venue. The Putney Inn took on the short-notice wedding and reception and did a wonderful job. Sarah, despite all the last-minute excitement, was a relaxed and beautiful bride.

In celebration of Guilford's 250th anniversary, local author Verandah Porche wrote a play for voices based on interviews with longtime Guilford residents. I made images to be projected during the play. Here, our neighbor Sarah portrays a young woman whose dad used to switch her with goldenrod when she was being stubborn.

I love this couple, and they clearly loved each other. They didn't miss too many dances at Liz and Justin's reception!

Happily, we ended up the year where we started, at Lynn and Charlie's house in Fish Creek, this time to celebrate the arrival of our first grand-nephew (OMG!), Weston.
Kurt, Mariah and Weston join hands for the adventure ahead.

Les and I hope you have a wonderful 2012, filled with good celebrations, rich emotion, and dark chocolate.
